Meet the Governors

Co-opted Governors

Mr. Matthew Brown (Chair of Governors)

I have been a Governor at the School for sixteen years. Firstly as a Parent Governor when my son and daughter started at the school in 2003 but now as a Co-Opted Governor. I took early retirement from my role as Chief Executive Officer of a financial services company two years ago which has given me the time to take on the role of Chair of Governors. I am passionate about the School and its role in providing the best possible start for our children.

I am currently at the University of Essex studying for a BA in history. In my spare time, I am a keen gardener, golfer, bell ringer and runner.

Ms. Hannah Marshallsay (Vice Chair)

I was appointed as a governor 6 years ago and have enjoyed contributing to the success of the school in that time. I have had two daughters who have now left the school and my youngest daughter, Cassia, is in Year 3.

I am a freelance Marketer, helping local businesses, organisations and charities grow. One thing I'd like to do as a governor is use my marketing knowledge to build on the school's growing good reputation and help it stand out more in the local area.

I am Vice Chair of Governors and am on the Pay & Performance Committee. I have responsibility for EYFS.

Mr. James Canton

I am a Co-Opted governor focussing specifically on English provision at the school. My daughter Molly is in Year 5.  I am on the PAC Committee.

I was a teacher of English language and literature for many years at Honywood Community Science School and Braintree Sixth Form. I am currently a lecturer in literature at the University of Essex.  My book 'Out of Essex' explores the literary landscape of the county, following the footsteps of such writers as Shakespeare, Defoe and HG Wells in Essex.

Mr. Ben Castell

This is my eighth year as a governor at our school and was lucky enough to see my daughter Mille progress happily and successfully through all the years, so the school is very close to my heart and has my sincere gratitude.

I’ve lived in Earls Colne for ten years. Prior to that I  lived in Kent where I was Chair of Governors in a local primary school. I work in London as an ombudsman for the Financial Ombudsman Service and have governor responsibility for Maths and Equality.

Mr. Matt Mackman (Safeguarding Lead)

Despite training as an artist many years ago, I've had a number of professions including heading a charity fundraising organisation, being responsible for performance and information at Essex Probation and I also worked as a teacher within higher and further education. I now work full time as an artist dividing my time between my own studio practice, gallery work and delivering bespoke workshops at schools across Essex.

I was fortunate to have enjoyed my own learning experience and have never lost my passion for education which is why I wanted to get involved with my local school.  As a governor l hope to continue giving something back and help make the outcomes better for the children at Earls Colne Primary which includes my own 3 children.  I am on the PAC and Appeals Committee with responsibility for English, Culture and Safeguarding.

Mr. Mike Watson

I have been a co-opted governor since December 2015. I have oversight responsibility for School Finances, along with the subjects of Geography, History and RE. I also oversee pupil attendance and am a member of the Pay and Performance Committee.

I have two grand-daughters in Year 4, and one grand-daughter in Reception. My son also attended the school. I have lived in the village for over 15 years and have a professional background in Financial Services for a global bank.

I am passionate about all children having the opportunity to acquire a balanced education which enables them to fulfill their own individual promise, whatever that may be.

Mr. Dan Salt

I joined the Governing Body as Co-Opted Governor in 2016.  I have a daughter at the school, Holly, and a pre-school son Brody.  I currently work as a designer and leader of software for General Electric, building systems for the next generation of electrical networks around the world.  I work primarily from home in the village, but also travel to various company and customer sites.  I am passionate about the value of ICT and computing in schools, not only to gain skills in IT, but to assist the learning of many other aspects of the curriculum.  I also run an after-school Coding Club, which further encourages our children to work together and build confidence.

As a governor I have responsibility for the areas of ICT and Design.

Mrs. Amabel Laurie

I am a co-opted governor, joining the Board in 2017.  My children currently attend the school and Hippos nursery.  I am a Geologist, with experience of working in the mining, construction and oil and gas industries both in the UK and abroad.  Having lived and worked overseas for some 18 years, I am very pleased to be back in this very special corner of Essex, as I am originally from Wakes Colne.

I strongly believe that education is key, both to individuals, the local community and our society and future.  I joined the Governing Board because I was keen to use my skills and experience to assist with providing a good education for all.

My area of responsibility is Science and Technology, which includes the subjects of Science, Design, Technology and ICT. My particular focus is Science.

Mr. Mike Woolgar

I am very pleased to have been appointed as a co-opted governor and to have the opportunity to give something back to the community and support the school. I believe the time spent in primary school is key to a child’s development and is a period when children should be happy, confident in their environment, motivated and engaged with their learning.

My professional background is in Human Resources, although I have also managed a number of administration, project and business improvement activities over the years. I hope my skills and experience will complement those of the other governors and help me contribute to the school’s ongoing reputation and success.

I have two children. In my spare time I enjoy training at the gym, playing guitar and learning to speak Italian.

Partnership Governors

Mr. George Posner

I’m a Partnership Governor and have been a Governor since 1991. I have lived in Earls Colne since 1977 and both my daughters attended the primary school. I worked in banking for 35 years, following which I was Director of a Colchester based charity for the next 13 years.

I have been involved with Earls Colne Scout Group since 1979 and was Scout Leader for 24 years. I was one of the five founder Trustees of the Earls Colne Millennium Green, serving for 14 years, and have been involved with the Aldham Old Time Rally since 1980.

I am the school’s Responsible Officer and also Link Governor (Training). Additionally I have joint responsibility for PE & PSHE. Since March 2012 I have assisted in the school for one day a week as a volunteer helper within Key Stage 1.

Parent Governors

Mrs. Toni Pitt

I am very grateful to have been recently appointed as the latest parent governor. I currently have two sons that attend the school and a younger son that will hopefully attend when he is old enough. My two step children also attended Earls Colne Primary and have gone on to attend local secondary and high schools. I have always been active in the school. I have volunteered regularly, helping with reading in KS1 and supporting school trips, swimming lessons and Friends events.

Previously I was a Police Officer for eleven years, five of which was spent specialising on the Mounted Section before I was medically retired due to an injury. I have recently started up own business, operating from home.

I have joint responsibility for PE, PHSE and English and Culture.

LA Governors

Mr. Richard Farnes

I became the Local Authority Governor last year. I have lived in the village since 2014, and both my sons have attended the school, my youngest currently in Year 4.

I am a self-employed professional musician and earn my keep as an orchestral conductor, working mainly in concert halls and theatre both in the UK and abroad. Before moving to Earls Colne I was for twelve years Musical Director at Opera North in Leeds.

I am on the PAC Committee with a responsibility for Culture and have just taken on responsibility for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I also have a strong interest in Geography and Earth Sciences, and am a keen amateur astronomer. When not doing that or taking my boys to football, I enjoy gardening, cycling and hill walking - not the most demanding of pursuits in Essex.
