At Earls Colne Primary School and Nursery the Lower Phase consists of Year 1 and Year 2.
There are two classes in each year group.
Our Year 1 classes are called Tigers and Lions. Tigers are taught by Mrs Webb on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with Mrs Oldaker teaching for the rest of the week. Miss Buso is Lions class teacher throughout the week.
In Year 2 they are named Zebras and Giraffes. Miss Henriksen teaches in Giraffes and Zebras are taught by Mrs Thompson from Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Whitehead, whilst Mrs Downer is on maternity leave, on Thursday and Friday.
All classes are supported by LSAs every morning and carry out small group work in the afternoon.
All children in the Lower Phase are expected to read at home at least three times a week and to take time discussing the story, characters and predicting what might happen next. Once a term, children are invited to complete a longer piece of home learning which is linked to their topic.
In Year 1, children are given word walls for reading and a spelling grid linked to the phonics that they have been learning in class. They are also set a weekly maths task, again linked to learning that has taken place in the classroom. In the summer term, some children will be set reading comprehension activities.
Year 2 children are given spellings weekly which often, but not always, follow a spelling rule. They are also set a weekly maths task, again linked to learning that has taken place in the classroom. Children are also set reading comprehension activities.
