Maths

At Earls Colne we teach Maths in line with the current National Curriculum, developing the child's proficiency and confidence in the use of numbers and measures. We teach the children to understand the number system, develop various computational skills and to solve problems in a variety of contexts, thus helping to understand the practical use of maths in daily life. They learn to understand the ways in which information is gathered and represented in tables and charts and to understand the properties of shape, position and movement.

Our goal is to ensure that children are numerate and have the confidence to tackle mathematical problems. Our teaching of maths is practical and interactive, often taking place outside the classroom.

To be successful in maths children need to:

  • Have a sense of the size of number
  • Know number facts by heart such as addition/subtraction facts to 20 and times tables
  • Calculate effectiviely using mental and written strategies
  • Know when it is appropriate to use a calculator
  • Make sense of number problems and know the operations needed to solve them
  • Have strategies to check their answers
  • Be able to explain their reasoning using the correct mathematical language
  • Suggest suitable units of measurement and make sensible estimates

Maths often takes place outdoors
