Clubs and Activities

At Earls Colne Primary & Nursery we value the contribution made to a child's learning by extra-curricular activities. We offer a wide variety of activities and clubs both at lunch time and after school. Some of these activities are run by teachers or sporting organisations and some by volunteers.

Recently the children have had the chance to participate in athletics, textiles, rounders, dance and netball. The weekly tennis and football clubs run by outside coaches are very popular. Periodically the Friends run an after school cinema club which plays to a packed house.

Gardening Club & Oliver's Lodge Garden Renovation

The garden behind Oliver's Lodge had fallen into disrepair, to say the least!  Weeds, brambles and nettles had taken over and the raised beds were rotting before our eyes!  Far from a peaceful garden for some therapeutic gardening activities, it was unsafe for children to access.

A team of volunteers from our dedicated 'Friends' came to the rescue and began to clear the site, then during half term Mark Houghton (gardening services) cleared the site and levelled it, laid membrane and bark and assembled raised beds.  This work was carried out at little more than cost and the beautiful green oak, for the raised beds was generously donated by 'Thorogood Timber Ltd', Ardleigh.

The garden is now being designed, dug and planted by our enthusiatic children in gardening club, led by Mrs Turner.  They hope to encourage bees and butterflies next summer, are already planting bulbs for spring flowers and seeds for some winter vegetables!

Netball Club

Netball club is an after school club on a Tuesday. Mrs Vine and Mrs McKean run the club and help us learn lots of different netball skills. We have learned the different passes, for example, chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass. Also, we have learned how to shoot when you are by the net while playing the game. To be able to play, you need to know the different positions - centre, goal shooter, goal attack, goal defence, goalkeeper and timekeeper. We really enjoy netball because the teachers are very helpful and improve our skills. Before playing matches, we warm up by jogging around the playground and stretching. We practise by either shooting into the net or passing to each other in partners. Year 6 go to netball tournaments and always try their best to win.

Table Tennis Club

We are very lucky to have a qualified table tennis coach (Aad Kwakkelstein) from the Earls Colne Recreation Club who is willing to run an after-school club for us.  We have two table tennis tables, one of which was kindly donated to us by the Recreation Club, and Aad brings his own equipment for the sessions: bats, balls and nets.

Aad’s qualifications:

  • UKCC Level 3 table tennis coach
  • PTLLS Level 3 (tutor) / CAVA Level 4 (assessor)
  • Suffolk Sport CRB-check (enhanced)
  • First Aid/Safeguarding & Child Protection/Disability Awareness/Equity in Coaching

Aad’s experience:

  • Dutch national coach
  • Club coach (the Netherlands, Harlow, London, Ipswich, Stowmarket)

“I am really enjoying the table tennis club. At table tennis, we are taught how to hold the bat and how to rally. We rally against each other on different sized tables and we play games like copying what the leader does with the ball.  Aad has taught us lots and makes us laugh but in a sensible way. I think everyone likes him.”

The Big Bike Ride

On Sunday, 1st October, many of our pupils gathered at the airfield to raise money for the school.  We took part in a bike ride, seeing how many laps we could achieve.  As well as this, Friends sold home made refreshments for the tired out cyclists.  Outstandingly, we managed to raise the mind blowing amount of £190 for the school whilst becoming fit at this event.  Maybe you should come next year to help contribute to the money and have a good time.

By Eva C & Eva MC  Year 6

'The children really embraced the Big Bike Ride challenge!  A total of 49 children from Earls COlne Primary School & Nursery took part.  The klargest number of laps achieved by one child was 32 and between them all , they completed 693 laps, a whooping 346.5 miles, which is the distance from here to Glasgow!

Most of all, the children should all feel very proud and pleased with themselves as they have managed to raise £190 today through all their hard work and determination.  This money will be going towards a really exciting new school project - an outdoor learning are.'

SCHOOL CLOSED!

Unfortunately, due to sheet ice around and on the school site we have had to make the decision to close the school we would not be able to guarantee the safety of children and staff in the current circumstances.

Click here to find out about our amazing Fireworks Display.  We raised a whopping £6758 for our school.
